Plug-in Solar Legal from 27th August 2026

From 27 August 2026, new UK regulations will allow approved plug-in solar systems to be connected using a standard household socket, provided they meet the required safety standards. From this date plug-in solar systems should start to become available in shops and online, typically costing between £300 – £600. These systems could save you around £95 – £155 per year, if you are able to use the energy as it is generated during the day.

Plug-in solar could be a great option to reduce your bills you if you can’t afford or aren’t able to put conventional solar panels on your roof. For example if you live in a flat with a balcony.

There are a few things to bear in mind though if you are thinking of buying a system, so we have created a Plugin-Solar FAQ, which also includes links to even more information. It also has some information about plug-in batteries, which could be the next step in 2027.
