Energy Alton is run entirely by volunteers. It grew out of the Greening Alton and Holybourne campaign, which started in 2009. In January 2012 we won a £84,000 government grant and we ran a High Street Advice Centre on energy efficiency during that year.

In 2011 we registered as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, and then became a Community Interest Company in 2014.

Since 2010, we have offered to the public free home energy surveys.  In 2012 we bought a camera to offer free thermal imaging.  We also helped families to obtain free loft insulation while it was available. We have held energy-saving and renewable energy workshops and demonstrations.  We also ran an advice desk in Alton Library for some years.  Advice is now available on request.

In 2014 Energy Alton won a Community Renewable Energy Award from the National Energy Foundation for installing a 10kW solar photovoltaic system on Alton Library. From 2016 we have engaged in supporting other potential renewable energy schemes, e.g. schools.

Through our regular programme of public meetings, special events and links with other organisations, we also promote other sustainability issues such as climate change, energy-efficient transport and travel and effective waste management, including single use plastics
