As a result of the success of our efforts to promote and distribute loft insulation to households in and around Alton, Insulate Hampshire, the managers of the DIY roof insulation project, offered to install photovoltaic panels on the roof of a community building of our choice. We identified the new library building as the most suitable in the town and entered into an agreement with Hampshire County Council to use the roof space.
Planning permission was obtained from East Hampshire District Council, who also awarded us a grant of £2000 towards the cost of the scaffolding needed for the works. Hampshire County Council contributed £10,000 to upgrade the system from 4kW to 10kW. In November 2013 a 10kW system was installed on the library, which now generates around 10MW per year.
